MUGS trip 2007 Leeds just south of the Punjab.
10 MUGS made the trip under glowering skies to the Alwoodly club in North Leeds. The rain began to turn serious about 12 and a delayed start but the course was superb under the conditions. The greens remained playable and a testament to the green staff and the terrain. Good sercvice was had from the bar staff and we moved up the road to the Harewood Arms Hotel where the accomodation was excellent and the staff very helpful. At this time it was hammering down with rain and it was difficult to see an end to it.
However the ever resourcefull MUGS set to work on the drinking making sure the weather did not detract from the main event of good fellowship eating and drinking in a style which only they can do. There can be no doubt in the Societies stakes they are amongst the top three for this sport. Dinner was followed by more ale and then we were asked to adjourn to a committee room for afters. The discussion which followed demanded ever increasing degrees of concentration as the effects of the alcohol and exertions of the day began to tell particularly on the more aging of the MUGS who were yawning and examining the inside of their eyelids. However there were still some stalwards who could force home their points with good humour and a will to survive. The subject of the discussion of course is sub-judice until someone leaks it to the Sun. (Still raining) Compliments were paid to the organisers and soon we repaired to bed. Snoring was not obligatory but apparently this was no deterrent to some.
The morning and it was obvious to all that the fact that we couldn't walk from the rooms to the restaurant unless by a circuatous indoor route, indicated the need for more than umbrellas, Noah was required.
Off to Moortown and a realisation that the lake outside was not in fact part of the course and had appeared overnight. This made the decision to abandon the trip a certainty. A trip back to the hotel and pack before setting off through the most horrendous weather passing Sheffield where the dam was rapidly filling, then to the M42 where the sun almost came out. A check at Willesley Park and we stopped there to play 18 holes. 14 in the dry and the last in the rain we left behind at Leeds. A drive to Lyndon Road and the Rajnagar (Not the Rajastan) for a super curry and then home to a dry bed. A Shame as the coursees were probably the best the North can provide and in such close proximity. Look at the picture page next.
